2D1N D'Kranji Farm Resort

Over the weekend, I hosted a BBQ at D'Kranji Farm Resort for my In-Laws and spent a night with my family at the resort.

The resort is located at Neo Tiew Lane 2, which is at a very remote part of Singapore. Although there are shuttle service from Kranji/Yew Tee MRT, it would be best if you drive there.

It was a first for me to do a "drive thru" check in to the resort after 2pm on Saturday. There is a personal car porch in front of each "villa" with electronic gates.

You can help yourself to all the drinks (including beers) in the minibar as they are all complimentary.

The "villa" is rather new and very well furnished with an open air toilet and shower area where you may admire the little, enclosed, private garden and feed the mosquitoes. Of course they provide complimentary "spa-like", aroma therapeutic, scented "mosquito" incense for you to repel the little blood suckers while you are going about with your businesses. Frankly and surprisingly, I did not get bitten at all throughout the stay!

The highlight is the BBQ. I get to choose to host it right outside the villa (along the roadside) or at a sheltered area (next to the farm). The choice is obvious right? We get to admire the beautiful sun setting beyond the horizon of the corn field while we start up the BBQ pit. The shelter is well lit and tables and chairs were provided. The toilet/washing point is less then 10 meters away. (How convenient!) My family had a great time a the BBQ. We had the whole place to ourselves (like a private event). The food were catered from the resort at $20++ per pax. The only downside was that there were NO satays in the menu. How can we have a BBQ without satays! Therefore I ordered seperately from Kwong Satay, 50 pork, 50 chicken and 10 Kwong's special pork belly satays plus 5 ketupat at less then $38 with 1 big packet of satay sauce, cucumber and onions. May I add that the satay (I feel) is the most delicious.

While the ladies make themselves busy at the BBQ pit, the rest of us entertained the kids by show them around the nearby seafood restaurant where the showcase their live seafood. We have a nice background music as there was a live band playing at the beer garden next to the restaurant.

The next day, we got up early to have a morning stroll in the farm. (Actually, we were all hungry but the breakfast provided were only ready by 8:30am) Thereafter we had a scrumptious breakfast of Nasi Lemak, Bee Hoon, porridge, toast...etc

We were treated with a complimentary 15 minutes foot "ritual" at the spa in the resort where Kang Le could only watch as we enjoyed ourselves.

Unfortunately, due to work we had to cut our stay slightly shorter and checked out at about 10:30am.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience. I would definitely recommend the resort to you but most probably I will not go back again. (Seen it once, you seen it all) Oh... BTW, FYI, the entire stay cost us $250 nett.

(Perfect Cut)

(Let it go Let it go)
(Let it go Let it go)

(Let’s move on Let’s move on)
(Let’s move on Let’s move on)

4D3N Taipei - Day 1

Ready... Get Set...
Could not get much rest the night before due to the excitement of our first family trip. Woke up 5 am in the morning and started to get prepared. After a final round of inspection, we set off to the airport. I had purposely timed to get a cab between the 6:30am and 7am window, after mid night surcharge had ended and before peak hour surcharge starts. Fortunately there were lots of cab and we spend no time in arriving at the Changi International airport terminal 3. We had a smooth check in of our luggage and was issued our boarding pass. Just to mention, I had tried to check in online 48 hours before the flight via the SIA website but fail. Upon checking, it was because we were travelling with an infant. Since it was still early, we had our breakfast at Delifrance before boarding the plane SQ876.

Fly...
It had been 3 years since I last flew and it was Kang Le's first. Although our tickets were economy class, we were allowed to board right after the first and business class, just before the rest of the economy class, all thanks to Kang Le. I thought that was a very good arrangement. It give us time and space to get ourselves settled down before the rest of the passengers packed in. As the plane taxi and begin its take off, we begin to worry if Kang Le was able to equalize the pressure of the take off. We tried to coax him to drink water hoping that the swallowing would help him equalize. To our surprise, he was not very affected by the pressure and that felt like a good start to our holiday. After the seat belt light went off, the air stewardess fixed a baby cot for Kang Le right before our seats. Pardon me for "being in the mountains for too long", but I had not expected such arrangement on a flight for infants. She presented us a "goodie" bag completed with diapers, bibs, toys, wet tissues...etc for Kang Le. Later she even provided Kang Le with baby food and warmed them up. Though I did not find the flight entertainment (watched "Jumpers") interesting, the brunch actually made up for it. Frankly, it took me several visits to the lavatory before I discovered that the sink is not choked but I will have to press a button to drain the water away... *embarrass* The flight experience on the whole made me feel comforted as the extra buck spent to fly with SIA was a good choice.

Arrived
After we landed we cleared customs and immigrations smooth but spent quite a while to collect our luggage. As we entered the arrival hall, we begin searching for the local tour agency that was to receive us. Probably due to the insufficient rest the night before, I missed my own name twice before finding it. The local tour guide gathered all of us and started to take attendance. She was concern as a family she was to receive was absent. However, she guided us to the bus to "rest" before she left to locate them. Later, she returned and updated that the family had some problems with their luggage and apologised for the delay. The tour guide was very professional as she kept her cool, was very warm and friendly and kept us inform of her whereabouts, happenings and provided information during the journey. Although the time we spent with her was only from the airport to the hotel, I felt that she had given us a very good impression of Taiwan and her people.

The Hotel
We were the second group to be dropped off at our hotel, Hotel Royal Castle(成都大饭店). Due to the delay at the airport, we were behind our schedule. However, it did not worry us as it was free and easy thereafter. We started to unpack after inspecting the room. Although we requested for a baby cot for Kang Le, the hotel does not provide such facilities. Therefore the whole family of 3 will have to squeeze in the king size bed. I contemplated to have a additional bed and was advise that our room was not big enough to accommodate one. To do so we will need to change to another room and the changes for the additional bed (if I remember correctly) was NT350 (S$16) per night. As we had started unpacking, I decided to try squeezing for a night before deciding on the additional bed.

The MRT
We began our sightseeing at Lung Shan Temple (龍山寺) which was one MRT station from Xi Meng Ding (西门町) where our hotel was located. The MRT is very simlar to Singapore's MRT. The main differences that I noticed is

  1. the seating structure which I feel is better then Singapore.

  2. the impressive behavior of the locals on the MRT. (e.g. never fail to give up seats to the needy, organised queuing before the doors during peak hours...etc)

It had been quite some time that I had last visit a place of worship, the last I could remember was at Wong Tai Sin temple (黄大仙) back at Hong Kong in 2005, and it never failed to impress me that Chinese (taoist) are very devoted worshipers. The temple was immersed with incense and singing of prayers for the deities. The temple was packed with devotees. We did not take any pictures within the temple so as not to show any disrespect. We made a quick tour of the temple and exited so that we would not cause inconvenience to the worshipers and before we start tearing from the incense.

We spent no time in locating Guang Zhou Street (广州街) as the street entrance was right next to the temple. I was very excited as I had been longing to visit a night market (夜市) in Taiwan since many (about 8) years ago. I spent no time in locating my favorite "smelly" bean curd (臭豆腐). At about 5 pm, I guess we were a little early as many stalls were not ready or only in the midst of setting up. Walking along Guang Zhou Street, we came to the intersection with Hua Xi Street (华西街) which is known for its exotic dishes (e.g. snake, turtles...etc) from the internet. We took a walk down Hua Xi Street to see for ourselves. We did locate a few shops/restaurants that offers these exotic dishes but I do not seem them crowded with locals or tourist (probably we are just too early). There are also KTVs and most eateries with offers a huge varieties of dishes. Unfortunately, we were not so game to try them fearing that we might catch some sickness or that our stomach were not seasoned/trained for such adventures. By then all the walking had tired our legs and we drop into a desert shop to grap something. We ordered Zhong He Dou Hua(综合豆花) and some hot sweet rice/porridge thingy (cannot remember the name). After wetting out appetite, we went on with Moji ("麻吉"), Tian Bu La (甜不辣) and Ai Yu Ping(愛玉冰).

西门町
We made out way back to 西门町 and walked around before deciding to eat at Genki Sushi. Somehow the food seems to taste better and fresher then Singapore. After freshening up at the hotel, we went on to explore the night seen at 西门町. I finally had my very missed 臭豆腐 at the store just opposite Rainbow Hotel. There where other roadside stores that we wanted to try but they were so crowded.

Prelude of 4D3N Taipei Free & Easy

This has been my long awaited overseas trip with my family for 3 years. In this entry I will be sharing my planning process and chronicles of the trip. I hope this will be useful for anyone intending to tour Taipei, especially for parents planning an overseas trip with infants.

Deciding...
It all started off being bored of going to shopping malls or local tourist attractions on weekends because after some time most of these places have been covered. First, was the thought of visiting my friend, James, who is a PR working in Australia and had recently acquired his own logging. He had suggested this during his Chinese New Year visit back in Singapore. After studying the option thoroughly, the finance and duration of the trip just did not work out very well. The main show stopper is that we have to care for our 14 month old son as it was his first overseas trip. We do not want to strain him with a lenghty trip with lots of long drives between places of interest, unpredictable meal and resting schedule. We had to work on having at least a proper 2 hour nap during the day and places where we can seat him down properly, prepare and feed him baby food ensuring enough rest and nutrition for his growing needs are not compromised. Eventually Taiwan (Taipei) was decided with the following considerations:

1. Ease of communications - speaking mandarin and able to understand chinese road signs.
2. Ease and low cost short distance travelling - MRTs & metered cabs.
3. Better hygenie standard - infant/child nursery or breast feeding facilities.
4. Eating & shopping paradise - lots of Taiwan local delights and places to bargain.
5. Not much educational values since a 14 month old will not remember anything.
6. Ease of purchasing daily necessities - e.g. diapers, milk powder...etc.

Booking...
Without much experience in hotel and air ticket booking, going to a tour agency for a Free & Easy package is the best option. The package included return air tickets to Taipei, airport and hotel bus transfers and 4 days 3 nights of hotel stay (with a complimentary 1 day unlimited MRT rides for 2 adults). Since it was more of an eating and shopping trip, low budget hotels; Hotel Rainbow and Hotel Royal Castle which were located at the popular Xi Meng Ding shopping district were recommeded. The "low budget" hotel was a worry because we do not want a holiday to turn out to be a refugee camp. Fortunately, after checking out the internet on reviews and pictures of the hotel from tourist around the world, the hotels were properly/acceptably funished with daily room service to clean up our rooms, change towels, bedsheets, empty rubbish bins, topup tolietries and daily breakfast which set our minds at ease. Eventally, we were offered Hotel Royal Castle since the agency could not secure a room in Hotel Rainbow. As for picking the airline, safe, comfortable and good service standard was important not to set a negative experience for our first family overseas trip with an infrant that may deter future family travel. Therefore for a couple of hundreds more we decided to fly with SIA. Knowing that we have spent quite a fair bit so far, we wanted to be adequately insured for any unforseen circumstances during the trip so that we do not need to deplete more savings. A financial advisor friend helped with the necessary to get us insured with a family travel insurance plan from AIG.

Planning...
Next was to do "homework". As this was the first Free & Easy trip, being the man of the family, it dawned on me that the success or failure of the trip now falls on my shoulder as I will be deciding what to do, where to go, how to reach, contingency plans, dry weather plans, wet weather plans, lost procedures, communication, medical, ration, transport, weather monitoring, currency conversion ...etc.

Without further ado, I am proud to present my master itineary.

Packing...
It was very fortunate that my wife did a very good job in preparing the packing list and we started packing 1 week in advance. We packed with the mindset of bring more rather then regreting later for not bringing. It was so detailed that we listed when to pack each item, where to pack it and how to pack it. Packing list is P & C (private and confidential).

With all said and done, we are ready for the trip...
